5 Reports of Identity Theft Reported in Elmhurst Last Week: Police Blotter

The following items were taken from the Elmhurst police blotter.

Identity theft

  • A woman living in Texas complained that an unknown person had taken cash out of her bank account without her permission. She said someone had also used her credit cards in Illinois.
  • An Elmhurst resident reported Dec. 9 that someone had withdrawn money from her bank account through a PayPal service.
  • A man who lives on the 500 block of Sunnyside said someone cashed three checks addressed to him from Sarasota, Florida. The man said he didn’t authorize those transactions and cancelled his bank account.
  • A man said that someone he didn’t know contacted FitBit and requested a replacement for a broken device. The man said his FitBit wasn’t broken and he cancelled the request through FitBit.
  • A male resident said he had received several notices from credit card companies stating that he had been denied the cards due to his credit score. The resident also said he hadn’t applied for the cards and that someone had purchased $300 of gift cards with a Target Red card.

Drugs

  • Mehmet Shukolli, 39, was stopped while driving Dec. 8 for not wearing a seatbelt and was then arrested for having marijuana with him. Shukolli was stopped at North and Highland.
  • An underage driver was stopped Dec. 9 for dim headlights and was subsequently arrested and charged for not having a valid driver’s license or insurance, the dim lights, having marijuana in his car and breaking curfew. Another minor with him was also issued a citation for curfew. The pair were later picked up by their mom at the police station.
  • Robert Herman, 22, was arrested after police responded to a drug complaint and found a plastic bag with 2 grams of marijuana in his possession.
  • Bryan Perez, 24, was stopped while driving Dec. 10 and cited for having open alcohol and drug paraphernalia in the car.
  • Ethan Strong, 23, was cited with possession of marijuana when cops noticed an odor coming from his car and found marijuana in the door handle of Strong’s car door.

DUI

  • Matthew Krause, 25, was charged with driving drunk after he was involved in a traffic crash at 193 N. Larch. He was also charged with failure to wear a seatbelt and improper lane usage.

Burglary

  • A resident living on the 500 block of West Babcock Avenue told police Dec. 8 that sometime between leaving her house at 2:40 p.m. and returning around 3:20 p.m., someone had forced their way into her home through the back sliding door and stolen cash, jewelry and iPads. There was damage to both the frame and back door, which had been left ajar when the unknown suspect left.

Retail theft

  • Two teens were caught trying to steal winter hats from a display in Whole Foods Dec. 8. A store clerk said they saw the two young men take the hats off of the display, walk toward the dairy section and try to conceal the merchandise in their coats. Afterwards, they walked out of the store without paying.
  • Aaron Marshall, 47, was witnessed possibly committing a retail theft at Jewel-Osco on S. York before going to Walgreens, where he was seen trying to hide numerous items in his coat before leaving the store without paying. He was caught and cited for the theft, as well as several car-related violations.

Disorderly conduct

  • David Hewson, 23, was taken into custody after an officer saw him urinating on the front of a business at 152 S. York. He led the police on a brief foot chase before he was arrested.

Domestic abuse

  • Benjamin Gurecki, 47, was arrested Dec. 10 and charged with domestic battery when someone in his home accused him of repeatedly punching her in the shoulder and whispering a threat to her.
