After Dozens of Identity Theft Reports Go Unsolved, 2 Are Arrested

A pair were caught in the act trying to buy cars with false information.

Unsolved identity theft cases have peppered suburban police blotters for months, but last week, two people were arrested for using fake IDs to make five-figure purchases.

Robert Thornton, 38, and Jarvis Shell, 34, both Chicago residents, admitted to using a website to buy fake social security numbers and driver’s licenses, Elmhurst police said. Shell went to the Larry Roesch car dealership at 200 W. Grand on the first of the month and bought a Dodge Durango with the false information.

Dec. 6, Shell brought Thornton with him to buy another car, but Larry Roesch employees found out their information was fake and called the police.
