Arrests for Theft and Forgery Reported; Multiple Cases Remain Unsolved

Cash, gift cards, copper, bikes, phones and more have been stolen in Elmhurst recently. And, sometimes, thieves just help themselves to your bank account.

Possession of Stolen Property

Esteban Dayton, 31, 2790 Rhodes Apt. 8, Northlake, was arrested and charged with driving without registration, driving without insurance, improper use of registration, possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of a license plate sticker after police pulled over his black Chrysler 300 at County Line and Grand at 1:12 a.m. May 3. Police said he had a registration sticker on his vehicle that did not match his car. He was released on bond.

Retail Theft Arrest

Joseph M. Cascella, 18, 656 Crockett, was arrested and charged with retail theft after he allegedly took underwear and a hooded sweatshirt worth $66 from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 5:54 p.m. May 2. He was released on bond.

Forgery Arrest

Steve Brales,  40, 996 Apple Valley Road, Bartlett, was arrested and charged with felony forgery at 5:12 p.m. April 30 after police said he was identified as the subject who cashed three checks that were returned "account closed" at Check Express, 683 W. North Ave.

Commercial Burglary

Police responded to a burglar alarm at All Credit Lenders, 691 W. North Ave., at 9:14 p.m. May 4. Security video showed an unknown subject enter the business at 9:10 p.m. and open a cash drawer. Nothing was taken, and police found the front door secure when they arrived.

Theft

Someone stole $70 from the middle console of a locked vehicle parked on the 200 block of East Columbia between 10 p.m. April 25 and 8:24 a.m. April 26.

A wallet containing $930 was taken from an unlocked locker at Elmhurst YMCA, 211 W. First St., at 3:29 p.m. April 27. The wallet was located but the money was missing.

A woman told police someone removed her wallet from her purse while she shopped at Dominick's, 215 S. Route 83, at 2:42 p.m. April 28. Video surveillance shows a female suspect distracting the woman while a male suspect reached into the victim's purse and quickly walked away. The wallet contained several credit cards, $100 cash, a Social Security card and drivers license. 

The general manager at Gerber Collision and Glass, 500 W. Lake St., reported $200 missing from the cash box between 5:50 p.m. April 27 and 7:15 a.m. April 29. An investigation is pending.

A woman reported that on two occasions, someone took money from her purse while she was getting physical therapy at ATI Physical Therapy, 684 W. North Ave., between 4 and 5:20 p.m. April 26. The victim said $400 was taken the first time, and $300 was taken the second time.

Someone took at Ugg purse worth $348.99 from the boutique at Elmhurst Hospital, 155 E. Brush Hill, between 3:16 and 3:20 p.m. April 30. The suspect was identified by two nurses.

A black 21-speed men's Giant Cypress hybrid bike and a silver/turquoise women's Giant Cypress hybrid bike, each worth $800, were taken from a back yard on the 100 block of South Arlington between 7:15 and 10:07 p.m. May 1.

Someone stole a copper bus bar from its mounting brackets on the south side of a cell tower service building owned by AT&T at 655 W. Grand Ave. between 9 a.m. March 8 and 10 a.m. May 1. About 5 feet of chain link fence was cut to gain access to the property. The same type of bus bar also was taken from the adjacent Sprint tower.

A locked, 22-inch white men's Trek bicycle worth $1,000 was taken from the bike rack on Park Street, just east of York Road, between 7:50 a.m. and 6:10 p.m. May 1.

A blue Stella McCartney handbag was taken from a vehicle parked on the 200 block of North York Road between 2:05 and 3:05 p.m. May 1. The rear passenger side window was shattered to gain entry. Thousands of dollars worth of gift cards, a debit card and drivers license were inside the purse. Estimated loss is $1,250 plus the amount of the gift cards.

An iPhone 4S and case was taken from a gym locker at Churchville Middle School, 155 Victory Parkway, between 12:30 and 1 p.m. May 1.

A copper bus bar was taken from property belonging to DuComm on the 700 block of Industrial Drive between 2 p.m. April 26 and 11:45 a.m. May 3. Six cables also were damaged.

A bumper was removed from a vehicle parked on Elm Creek Drive between 3 and 6 p.m. May 2. Estimated loss is $86.

A decorative gazing globe was taken from the front yard of a home on the 900 block of South Kent Avenue between 9:30 p.m. May 4 and 12:30 p.m. May 5. Two floodlights also were damaged. Loss and damage is estimated at $150.

A spare tire was taken from a vehicle parked at Lexington Square, 400 Butterfield Road, at around 10:38 a.m. May 6. A witness saw two men near the vehicle, and when they were confronted, they fled in a red Chrysler Sebring. The tire was worth $250.

A GPS was stolen from a vehicle parked in the southwest parking lot at McMaster-Carr, 600 County Line Road, between noon May 4 and 7:45 a.m. May 6. Loss is estimated at $300.

Credit Card Fraud

Someone used the credit card information of a resident of the 500 block of Fairview to make a purchase of $101.90 through Walmart.com. It was reported on May 1.

Someone used the debit card information of a resident of the 500 block of Howard to make an online purchase at Walmart.com for $162.67. The transaction was discovered on May 3.

Identity Theft

A victim told police she was dealing with a "Sears representative," who came up on her computer in a pop-up window chat, while she was attempting to make an online purchase from Sears at 8:45 p.m. May 4. She said she gave him her personal information and credit card number to complete the order. She was emailed a receipt and it showed she was charged for three other products she did not want.
