An Attorney Advocate Wants To Move Ward 6 Forward

Over the past several months, I have met many Ward 6 residents at the doors and on Zoom. I have been listening and learning, and I have repeatedly heard how people appreciate face time with a candidate who wants to represent them in city council. It is clear that residents want someone to advocate on their behalf in city government.

In a community as large and diverse as Elmhurst, the concerns residents have regarding our city are varied and multi-faceted. Ward 6 residents are not only worried about our infrastructure (stormwater projects, water rates, “complete” streets, and property taxes), but they are also concerned about whether Elmhurst is inclusive to people from all walks of life. I have lost count of the number of people who tell me they are troubled about equity and the inadequacy of affordable housing; in particular, pricing out senior citizens as well as socio-economically diverse families. I share all these concerns.

I’ve used my professional skills as a legal aid attorney, advocating for vulnerable and disenfranchised populations for more than ten years. I fought for domestic violence survivors to have their say against their abuser and receive their equitable distribution of property. I worked for senior citizens so they didn’t lose their housing, and for the disabled to receive their deserved disability payments. I devoted my time and heart to people who could not fight for themselves because of lack of education, language, access, and money. In Elmhurst, I have been committed as a volunteer in the community and for the community. As a founding member and current Chair for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in Elmhurst, my board and I have hosted numerous food and clothing drives, led community-wide events to raise gun violence prevention awareness, and advocated for common-sense policy change at all levels of government.

Now I want to turn my passion for community service and professional skills to work for Ward 6. I care about Elmhurst and my neighbors, and want to move the ward and our city forward. I’m prepared to argue for my constituents, and look out for their interests, but I am also interested in making policy so that there is progress for the city as a whole. I believe a valued leader is one who listens to not just her supporters, but all constituents and stakeholders, and, above all, keeps an open mind. In both big and small matters, I pledge to be an active alderman. I am the only candidate for Ward 6 who is offering open office hours, a newsletter, and active social media accounts, so that residents are informed, engaged, and represented. I won’t be a part-time politician, but a fully-invested advocate for you.
