Building Changes Set For Visitation Catholic Church

A part of a building will be torn down and replaced by a new structure.

ELMHURST, IL – Visitation Catholic Church in Elmhurst wants to renovate a part of its existing convent building and chapel and tear down the two-story portion of the structure.

It is seeking zoning permission from the city to make the changes.

Replacing the two-story building will be a one-story structure housing the parish administration offices, which will be moved from another part of the church's campus, according to city records.

The existing chapel and small lobby on the west side are set to undergo a renovation.

The project will use existing building foundations and not expand the church's building footprint, the proposal said. An existing one-story garage to the north of the building is set to be demolished and returned to green space.

"We anticipate very little impact to the surrounding neighborhood," the church said in city documents.

The Zoning and Planning Commission is slated to review the proposal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 209 N. York St.

The church is at 779 S. York St.
