Conrad Fischer Receives Outdoor Learning Area Thanks to Girl Scout Troop 41900

Conrad Fischer Elementary School is the recipient of a new outdoor learing area courtesy of a service project completed by the Conrad Fischer Girl Scout Troop #41900 last month.  The space, which is nestled beteween the school and a vegetable garden tended to by students, now features 14 individually cut stumps, cut from a tree that was destroyed by a storm last summer.  The stumps, which were fitted with rebar to ground them, were arranged in a semi-circle with one stump set up as a focal point for a teacher.   The idea was originally proposed by Mary Rizzo whose daugther is a first-grader in the troop.  The troop's leader Monica Lechowicz immediately embraced the idea.  "Conrad Fischer has a great student run garden, and the idea of adding another natural learning space was really exciting," Lechowicz said. Thirty-five students and parents came to the school to sand and install the new seating underneath the canopy of two big trees adjacent to the school.  The troop also donated and painted a rain barrel that will be used to collect water for the vegetable garden.
