ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst is planning to use two properties to improve flood control and parking in the Spring Road business district, the mayor said Monday.

At a City Council meeting, Mayor Scott Levin said the city will design the project this year and do the work in 2027.

Last year, the city bought the houses at 316 and 322 W. Eggleston Ave. to install "significant" underground floodwater storage and create 250 parking spaces, Levin said.

An open house with residents is planned for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at Phase Three Brewing Company, which is around the corner at 494 Spring Road. This is where residents can find out more about the project and give feedback, Levin said.

The mayor and Ward 5 aldermen Tina Park and James Nudera, who represent the neighborhood in question, are expected to attend.

After the city bought one of the properties last year, the seller, a limited liability company, saw a $175,000 gain after buying it a few months earlier. The previous homeowner called the city's handling of it "a failure all the way around."
