Elmhurst Arrests 3 On Gun Charges

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst police arrested three people on gun charges in separate incidents within about 12 hours Friday, according to a news release.

About 12:30 p.m., Elmhurst officers spotted a car suspected to be involved in a road rage incident, police said. A 911 caller told dispatchers the suspect pointed a handgun while driving on the expressway.

Elmhurst detectives stopped the suspect at North Avenue and the Interstate 294 ramp and arrested the person, police said. The suspect was turned over to the state police.

A couple of hours later, officers in the police department's strategic mission team spotted a car used in a previous retail theft. The car was in the Jewel parking lot at York Street and Butterfield Road.

Officers arrested the driver, 33-year-old Westchester resident Davares Kinsey, after he was seen stealing $140 worth of items from the store, DuPage County prosecutors said in a news release. A Smith & Wesson M&P 9 9mm handgun that had been stolen in Chicago was found in the Kinsey's car, police said.

As a convicted felon, Kinsey was barred from having guns, the news release said. He was charged with being a felon in possession of a gun and retail theft, among other offenses. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.

After midnight, an Elmhurst officer saw a driver veering over North Avenue's lane lines. The officer stopped the driver, a 67-year-old Joliet man, who was charged with DUI.

The man, a convicted felon, was found with a loaded handgun with a defaced serial number, police said. In addition to DUI, he was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.
