Elmhurst Catwalk Climbers Chased By Cops

One of those pursued dropped a purse, which was taken to the police station, authorities said.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving railroad trespassers, a quick-change scam, a reckless driver, an argument over a backfiring car, a domestic disturbance, theft and damage. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:

Railroad trespassers

  • Police were told that three people climbed onto the railroad signal catwalk about 10:30 p.m. Saturday at First Street and Highland Avenue. When police arrived, the trio climbed down the ladder and ran into nearby woods. One of the people dropped a purse containing a phone. The purse was taken back to the police station for safekeeping.

Quick-change scam

  • A cashier at Mariano's, 678 N. York St., was the victim of a quick-change scam about 7 p.m. Saturday. The cashier said a woman had requested change for her bills. The woman asked several times for different denominations and helped count the piles of cash. The woman stole an unknown amount of money and left. The scam was reported the next day. An investigation is pending.

Reckless driver

  • Police were called about a reckless driver shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday at York and Lexington streets. The driver said she was arguing with her boyfriend, who was walking. Her boyfriend, a 21-year-old Bensenville man, was wanted on a DuPage County warrant charging failure to appear in court.

  • A man told police that someone else argued with him after his car backfired about 8:30 p.m. Saturday near Chick-fil-A, 235 S. Route 83. The man then said he saw the other person damage his car with a key. The suspect was arrested and taken to the police station. He was released without charges, though police did not say why.

Domestic disturbance

  • Police responded to a domestic disturbance about 2 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of South Parkside Avenue. A woman told officers that another person yelled and spat on her. The suspect denied spitting. No arrests were made. The two people were separated for the night.

Theft

  • Three spare tires were stolen from vehicles overnight Wednesday at Cantor Construction Co., 925 S. Route 83.

Damage

  • Someone damaged the front door about 10 p.m. Thursday at Park Cleaners, 151 E. First St.

Fugitive driver

  • An officer tried to stop the driver of a black Ford Fusion about 10:30 a.m. Friday at Interstate 290 and York Street. The driver sped away, heading east on I-290.

Bicycle falls

  • A man fell off his bicycle about 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Spring Road and Vallette Street. He was bleeding from his head. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.
