Elmhurst D205 Absenteeism Falls; Big Drop At York

The district overall compares favorably with other area districts, state statistics show.

ELMHURST, IL – Chronic absenteeism dropped in Elmhurst School District 205 last year, a trend reflected in other school systems, according to the Illinois Report Card website.

The state tracks the rate of students who are absent 10 percent or more of the days in a school year, whether excused or not. For a 180-day year, that means a student missed at least 18 days, or 3½ weeks.

District-wide, 12 percent of students were chronically absent last year, down from 19 percent the previous year. Before the pandemic, the rate was 8 percent.

York High School saw an even bigger decline, falling to 22 percent, from 37 percent a year earlier, according to state statistics. The pre-pandemic rate was 10 percent.

District 205's overall chronic absenteeism of 12 percent last year compares to 16 percent in Wheaton District 200, 15 percent in Naperville District 203 and 14 percent in Barrington District 220. Those districts are all kindergarten through 12th grade.

York High's absenteeism of 22 percent was near the rate of high schools in similarly wealthy areas. For example, Hinsdale Central and Lyons Township high schools were at 19 percent and 23 percent, respectively.
