Elmhurst Now Has Texas-Style Barbecue Restaurant

An Elmhurst resident teamed up with a longtime restaurateur to open the eatery.

ELMHURST, IL – Golden Boy Barbecue opened at 551 S. York St. in Elmhurst a few weeks ago. It describes itself as a "live-fire restaurant inspired by Texas barbecue."

The restaurant takes the place of HB Jones, a build-your-own-burger restaurant that closed after a dozen years.

In 2016, Golden Boy's Joey Calcagno, along with his family, entered an Elmhurst "Cue for a Cause" rib competition, according to Golden Boy's website.

"There, he developed a taste for the patience and creativity essential to competition barbecue," the website says.

While away at college, Calcagno used his apartment as his test kitchen to find ways to make Central Texas-style barbecue. His story was later carried on the Big Ten Network.

After graduation, Calcagno visited Texas to learn more about barbecue culture, according to the website. He then teamed up with longtime restaurateur Tony Gambino to offer barbecue at HB Jones, the website said.

A month ago, Calcagno and Gambino opened Golden Boy Barbecue. The restaurant's menu is online.
