Elmhurst's New Fire Department Driving Simulator Could Cut Down on Collisions
The regional driving simulator is shared among 12 municipalities. It will be on display through August, with an open house set for Tuesday.

Elmhurst, IL — Twelve DuPage County fire departments are sharing a cooperative grant for a driving simulator that local representatives say is vital to the success of area emergency responders.
Elmhurst joins Addison, Bensenville, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Glenside, Itasca, Lombard, Oak Brook Terrace, Streamwood, Villa Park, Wood Dale, and York Center in the endeavor. It allows for a regional driving simulator aimed at reducing "fire apparatus collisions," department representatives said in a community alert.
"Fire apparatus collisions are the leading factors in traumatic firefighter deaths in recent years," they said. "Departments that fail to train their members in vehicle operations are putting themselves and their community at an increased risk."
