Housing May Replace Elmhurst Restaurant
A buyer has been in talks with the city, but has yet to start the formal process, an official said.

ELMHURST, IL — The site of Silverado Grill in Elmhurst may eventually become a residential area. But it may be awhile before that process begins.
During a Ward 5 meeting Tuesday at City Hall, a resident asked aldermen James Nudera and Tina Park to clarify the status of one of the “anchors” in the Spring Road business district, referring to Silverado, 447 Spring Road.
City Manager Jim Grabowski, who was in attendance, confirmed the property was under contract with a buyer. The buyer, he said, has been in discussions with the city about housing on the property.

Grabowski said the buyer has not submitted anything to begin the zoning process. That process would consist of three preliminary meetings with the City Council’s Development, Planning and Zoning Committee, a public input meeting, and a staff input meeting.
Afterward, the proposal would go through the Zoning and Planning Commission to see if any changes are warranted or needed. Finally, the commission would make a recommendation to the City Council for a final vote.

Grabowski said that if everything went well, the process could take as little as four months, but if any suggestions or changes were made, it would take longer.
Silverado owner Jack Island has not responded to Patch’s requests for comment.
Silverado has been in Elmhurst for more than three decades.
