ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst is continuing to see interest in more capacity for what is known as transit-oriented development, Mayor Scott Levin said Thursday.

He was referring to the apartment complexes that are built along the railroad tracks. Elmhurst's latest such building was the seven-story Vyne on Haven, which opened last April. It is now 80 percent full.

"We still, as a city, are mindful of the need for entry-level housing for people if you have children who want to move to town or seniors who want to downsize," Levin said during his State of the City address to the local chamber of commerce.

During his speech, Levin said Elmhurst's downtown saw significant closings last year. The longtime York Furrier boutique, which had been in business for more than 90 years, shut its doors.

The mayor said a new development is coming into the building, but he did not give details.

Additionally, Kong Dog, which opened last May downtown, closed "after many weeks of business," Levin said.

Meanwhile, Victory Meat and Seafood steakhouse is redeveloping, with an outdoor garden planned, he said.
