Knife Attack On Proviso West Student Leads To Lockdown: Officials

The attack took place in the school's parking lot and the victim was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, school officials said.

HILLSIDE, IL — A student at Proviso West High School sustained minor injuries after being attacked by another student with a knife in the school’s parking lot on Tuesday morning, officials said.

The incident took place at 10:10 a.m. on Tuesday, according to school officials, who said in a letter to parents that as a precaution school buildings were being placed on a soft lockdown in response to the attack.

WGN reported on Tuesday that two juveniles are in custody in connection with the incident. The report did not provide further information about the ages of the students.

In addition to the high school, Hillside Elementary was placed on a soft lockdown although school officials said that both buildings are secure.

"Swift action was taken by the school administration, local law enforcement, and emergency medical teams, who arrived promptly at the scene. The student was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment," Proviso West Principal Elizabeth Martinez wrote.

Martinez wrote that the school’s top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

“We will continue to work to ensure a secure and supportive environment for everyone in our school community,” Martinez wrote.
