Saturday was a beautiful day for baseball, but not so much for the York Dukes (14-16, 9-8 in conference), who were shut out at home against Naperville Central.
The Dukes had a tough outing against the powerhouse Redhawks (23-6, 17-3), who came into the game on a winning streak after sweeping a three-game series against West Chicago last week.
The Redhawks jumped out to a commanding lead by scoring three in the top of the first. Jason Wegner, Jeff Schank and Nick Lopez scored on two singles and a double. Another run by Jimmy Nashert in the fourth inning gave the Redhawks a 4-0 lead.
The Dukes had a chance to close in during the bottom of the fourth, after a double by Anthony Santos and singles by Pete Doughty and Seth Dvorak. But outs by Mike Ross and Niko Sanchez ended the fourth with the bases loaded.
It was over after the Redhawks' drove in four more runs—two on a homer by Bob McMillan—in the seventh.
Central travels to Downers Grove North (11-4, 8-3) at 4:30 p.m. Monday, and the Dukes take on Glenbard North (7-8, 4-6) in Carol Stream on Monday. IHSA Regional play begins on May 21.
