Flood Damage? Township May Be Able to Provide Assessment Relief

Also, city of Elmhurst shares update on progress of FEMA evaluation.

Damage incurred during the heavy rain and flooding April 17 and 18 may have reduced the value of some Elmhurst homes. Those property owners may be able to receive assessment relief for the 2013 assessment year (property taxes payable in 2014) by contacting their respective townships for more information.

Elmhurst residents who live in York Township (south of North Avenue) should contact the York Township Assessor’s office at (630) 627-3354 or visit its website. Deadline for applying to York Township is Friday, Aug. 16.

Residents in Addison Township (north of North Avenue) should contact the Addison Township Assessor’s office at (630) 530-8161.

Following is updated information from the Protect DuPage website with regard to status of financial relief for residents:

Monday through Thursday April 29-May 2, officials from DuPage County, Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Federal Emergency Management Agency toured flood-damaged areas, conducting a preliminary damage assessment based on the damage reports submitted by communities.

DuPage, IEMA and FEMA began meeting with municipal leaders May 6 to review the expenses incurred by governmental entities. The preliminary damage assessments in DuPage are anticipated to end no later than Friday, May 10. Shortly thereafter, a decision should be made regarding whether a Presidential Disaster Declaration is issued. A declaration may make assistance available to residents and business owners, or to governmental entities, or both. View a .pdf of the FEMA process step-by step at the Protect DuPage website.

Municipal, county, state and federal officials may ask residents questions about the depth of flooding in residences. But residents are encouraged to remain alert so that they do not fall victim to scams. Be leery of contractors who assure you that FEMA will reimburse you for repairs that they make. A Presidential Disaster Declaration has not yet been issued, so nobody can guarantee reimbursement by FEMA. Report any suspicious activity.
