Beware Of Pickpockets: Evanston Police Issue Warning
The Evanston Police Department is reminding residents to protect their personal property while out in public.
EVANSTON, IL — The Evanston Police Department issued a warning about pickpocket-style thefts within the city, reminding residents to protect their personal property.
Incidents of pickpocketing are more common in crowded locations such as grocery stores, restaurants and public transportation. Thieves tend to target vulnerable and elderly people, police said.
"Often, thieves quickly use stolen credit cards before victims realize their wallets or purses are missing," EPD said in a statement.

To help the public reduce the risk of being pickpocketed, police offered these safety tips:
- Be aware of your surroundings. Pickpockets are counting on people to be distracted while in public, so remain alert in crowded areas.
- Be familiar with common distraction tactics. Thieves may bump into someone or strike up a conversation to distract you.
- Keep your belongings secured and in front of you. Use front pants pockets, cross-body bags or bags with zippers to make it harder for thieves to access your belongings.
- Don't leave your belongings unattended in shopping carts. Placing a purse in a cart while browsing could open up an opportunity for thieves.
- Carry only essential items, like cards, cash and identification.
- Secure your items when sitting. Avoid hanging purses on the back of chairs and instead keep them in your view.
Anyone who becomes a victim of theft should file a police report and inform their bank of any stolen cards.
