Since 2012, Giving Tuesday has been a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups.
GENEVA, IL — If you’re like many of your Geneva neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.
Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Geneva area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:
- Fox Valley United Way, a group that works to ensure "all young children, birth to age five, have equitable access to early childhood resources and education [by] investing in the health, education and financial stability of all individuals in our community."
- Northern Illinois Food Bank, a Geneva-based food pantry that serves northern Illinois counties.
- The Joshua Tree Community, a not-for-profit organization that provides an underserved community of non-aggressive young adults with intellectual disabilities with activities to help enrich their lives.
- CASA Kane County, a nonprofit organization aiming to help children in abuse, neglect and private guardianship cases within the juvenile court system.
- Changing Children's Worlds Foundation, a charitable organization whose vision is to "reduce exposure to violence and aggression for every child and caregiver, allowing positive development and well-being."
- Anderson Humane, a South Elgin animal shelter that has given second chances to more than 4,000 animals since its inception in 1966. The organization also helps wild animals, certifies therapy pets and takes care of military members’ pets when owners are deployed.
