Application Deadline Nears For Vacant Geneva City Council Seat

GENEVA, IL — Candidates interested in filling the Ward 5 alderperson vacancy on the Geneva City Council have until Friday to apply.

Craig Maladra, who was one of two alderpeople for Ward 5, resigned from the position effective Sept. 30. His departure was due to his family moving out of the ward, city officials said.

Maladra first joined City Council in 2003 and was elected to another four-year term in 2023.

Geneva residents living within the current 5th Ward and interested in the position should submit a letter of interest to the City Clerk (City of Geneva, 22 S. First St., Geneva, IL 60134; Attn: 5th Ward Alderperson Vacancy). The Government Ethics Act also requires a statement of economic interest to be filed by the city clerk with the Kane County Clerk's Office.

Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered for the role.

• Have resided within the City’s 5th Ward for at least one year prior to appointment
• Be a legal U.S. citizen
• Be a registered voter
• Have not been convicted in a U.S. court for any felony crime, bribery or perjury
• Must not be in arrears in the payment of any tax or other indebtedness due to the city

A candidate will be appointed by Mayor Kevin Burns with the advice and consent of the City Council. The new alderperson will serve until May 5, 2025.

As a result of the shift in alderpeople, the April 2025 consolidated election will now have two open seats in Ward 5, with one carrying a two-year term and the other a four-year term.
