Garbage Pickup Earlier Thursday, Friday; Cooling Centers to Open

With extreme heat in the forecast, the city of Geneva is prepping.

GENEVA, IL — Due to the extreme heat expected in the coming days, Lakeshore Recycling Systems will begin collecting garbage and recycling 30 minutes earlier than normal on Thursday and Friday. Refuse drivers normally start their routes at 7 a.m., but the city of Geneva has granted Lakeshore permission to begin at 6:30 a.m. over the next two days to help workers avoid the brunt of hot weather. Geneva residents are encouraged to put their garbage and recycling out Wednesday evening to accommodate the schedule change.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for noon on Thursday through 7 p.m. Saturday. High temperatures will peak well into the 90s each day with Friday and Saturday potentially in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees. Adding humidity to the equation will make high temperatures feel like 104 to 114 degrees each afternoon.

The cumulative effects of the weather could lead to heat-related illnesses with prolonged exposure. People should plan ahead to have a cool place to shelter from the heat and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the warmest times of the day.
