Geneva Police Will Have Zero Tolerance For Speeding On 'Speed Awareness Day'

The Geneva Police Department will participate in a day-long, statewide effort to educate drivers and reduce speed-related crashes.

GENEVA, IL — The Geneva Police Department will take a zero-tolerance approach to speeding on July 23, which happens to be "Speed Awareness Day," officials said Friday.

Police will partner with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police as well as more than 300 local law enforcement agencies to increase patrols throughout the day, targeting speeding and other traffic violations.

The Speed Awareness Day campaign in Illinois has a two-fold approach: educating drivers on the risks of speeding and a zero-tolerance enforcement. The goal is to raise awareness and save lives, officials said.

Speeding is a factor in 45 percent of vehicle fatalities, 36 percent of injury crashes and 31 percent of all crashes, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation's 2023 Illinois Crash Facts and Statistics.

"Speeding is a choice that puts everyone at risk," police wrote in a news release. "It reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around other vehicles, increases stopping distance, and can lead to more severe crashes."
