Geneva Winter Parking Ban To Begin As Heavy Snow Is Expected

GENEVA, IL — Geneva will institute its winter parking ban starting at 2 a.m. Wednesday due to heavy snow in the forecast.

In Geneva, parking is prohibited on designated snow routes after 2 inches of snow and all streets after 3 inches. If weather conditions are as hazardous as predicted, a parking ban may be put into effect to promote public safety on roads, city officials said in an alert Tuesday morning.

Cars left on the street during the parking ban will be at risk of being towed or ticketed.

Travel conditions could be "very difficult, especially for the evening commute," officials said. Snowfall rates of an inch per hour are possible in the afternoon and evening Wednesday.
Geneva Public Works crews have begun applying salt brine to city roadways on Tuesday in preparation. The city will provide plowing updates throughout Wednesday.
"When the weather system does arrive, the top priority will be keeping state highways and other main arterial roadways clear throughout the day," Geneva officials said. "If the snow materializes in the morning, a secondary team will be activated to cut center driving lanes on residential streets."
After the winter storm on Wednesday, colder temperatures are expected on Thursday and another winter system could hit the area Friday night and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
