GENEVA, IL — The Geneva Police Department swore in its newest member during the June 23 Special Committee of the Whole meeting: a 20-month-old golden retriever named Tommy.

The centerpiece of the department's new comfort dog program, Tommy will embark on a mission whose primary goals are to provide emotional support and serve as a calming presence to those in need, officials said.

"Police regularly respond to incidents and events that have a profound effect on residents and officers," city officials wrote in a news release. "A comfort dog can help open lines of communication and offer a calming influence in difficult situations."

Tommy became a member of the department with the help of Healing Hearts Comfort Dogs, a nonprofit that raises and trains facility and comfort dogs. He was named after the father of one of the organization's representatives who worked in law enforcement.

Tommy's responsibilities will include attending local events, fostering a positive relationship between police and residents, participating in employee wellness events, visiting schools, and comforting those experiencing a crisis.

Geneva Community Services Officer Brad Koontz will serve as Tommy's primary handler.

"I am thankful to everyone who has made this program a possibility,” Geneva Police Chief Eric Passarelli said in a statement. "I truly believe that Tommy will have a significant impact, provide valuable assistance, and comfort those who need help."

Geneva's comfort dog program will not be used for apprehension, narcotics or other enforcement activity. The community can request a visit from Tommy by filling out an application form on the city's website.
