GENEVA, IL — Graham's 318 Coffee House, a downtown Geneva staple, will shut its doors after nearly 20 years in business, owners announced.

Although sister shop Graham's Fine Chocolates will "absolutely remain open," the cafe at 318 S. Third St. will say goodbye to its customers for the final time on April 28. In a letter, CEO Jayni Wunderlich cited COVID-19 and the loss of her father as reasons for the closure.

COVID-19, which resulted in "unprecedented ... challenges that tested our resolve and resilience" beginning in March 2020, hit about three weeks after Graham's unveiled its renovated space that had been closed for updates since 2019.

In April 2020, Wunderlich said her father was diagnosed with cancer before he died in March 2021.

"It was his dream to bring this coffee shop to life — his passion and dedication were the driving forces behind this endeavor, and his absence leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts," the owner said.

Wunderlich said the family realized they had to choose to prioritize their energies and resources.

"Running two completely different businesses simultaneously has stretched us thin, and we must now focus our efforts on the chocolate business, which is more aligned with our strengths and passions," the letter reads. "Please know that this decision was not made lightly. We have agonized over it, weighing the pros and cons, and considering every possible alternative. But ultimately, we must do what is best for our family and the future of the business."

Wunderlich, who continues to own the renovated space, said he "eagerly awaits the day when a new restaurant will come and breathe new life" into Third Street.

In light of the closure, the restaurateur is helping find new employment for her general manager, bakers, line cooks, baristas, cashiers and team leads, according to a post on Facebook.

"Thank you for your ongoing support and solidarity," she wrote in the post, asking anyone with leads or inquiries to email questions@318coffeehouse.com. "We are really feeling the love from this community, and for that, we are incredibly grateful."

Graham's Fine Chocolates can be found at 302 S. Third St. in Geneva and at 119 W. Front St. in Wheaton.
