Longtime Coach in Tri-Cities, Umpire for Geneva High Games Dies

Naughton is also remembered as a longtime mentor to children in the Tri-Cities.

GENEVA, IL - Bernard "Bernie" Naughton, a longtime coach and mentor to children across the Tri-Cities, has died at the age of 87.

Naughton was a longtime resident of Geneva, a U.S. Army veteran and a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Office. He was also a longtime member of the St. Charles American Legion Post #342.

He served as the athletic director and coach at St. Peter Catholic School in Geneva, coach for Geneva Park District basketball and baseball teams, a high school baseball umpire and as a mentor to children across the Tri-Cities, according to a news release from the city of Geneva.

The flag outside city hall in Geneva will be lowered Thursday to remember Naughton and will remain lowered through Monday. A moment of silence will be held at the start of the Geneva City Council meeting on Monday in remembrance of Naughton.

"The city would like to express its condolences to the Naughton family," according to a news release from the city of Geneva.

A visitation was held Wednesday and funeral was held Thursday morning f0r Naughton who died on March 25 at his home surrounded by his family.

Bernie grew up in St. Charles and graduated from Marmion Academy in 1947. He proudly served his country as a Private First Class in the Army and was a longtime member of the St. Charles American Legion Post #342. He carried mail for 35 years for the City of St. Charles and also worked 10 years as a meter reader. Bernie was the athletic director and coach for St. Peter Catholic School in Geneva as well as the Geneva Park District for many years coaching both baseball and basketball. He also enjoyed umpiring boy’s high school baseball games. He was an avid Cubs and Notre Dame fan and also liked to call the bingo games at the St. Charles Legion and VFW. His greatest enjoyment however was spending time with family and friends and he will be dearly missed.
