Popular Mexican Restaurant, Bar In Geneva To Shut Doors

GENEVA, IL — A Mexican restaurant and bar located in an ivy-covered historic Geneva building will permanently shut their doors, owners announced in an Aug. 30 post on Facebook.

Sergio's Cantina and 1910 Geneva, at 30 W. State St., will close in the next couple of weeks, according to the post.

Owners Sergio and Lindsey De Los Santos said they don't have an exact last date yet to "be respectful of our team members who are seeking new employment opportunities."

The Mexican restaurant opened in November 2007. This year marked Sergio's Cantina's 16 anniversary and 1910 Geneva's fifth.

"We're grateful for all the support we have received from our community all these years, and for being a special place so many have shared memories," the post reads. "Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to have our dream become a reality."

The news was met with more than 150 comments from visitors sharing memories and expressing sadness about the news.

"We wish you all the best in all your future endeavors," one person said. "These restaurants that you are closing have been very special and we have enjoyed many precious time celebrating, birthdays, anniversaries and more there. The food in the atmosphere that you created was so wonderful. Thank you so much."

"To say that I’m heartbroken is an understatement," someone wrote. "Be prepared for some ugly crying from me when Bob and I come in to say goodbye."

"So many memories, parties and good times," another person said. "Thanks for being so great. From bouncing at Swedish Days to amazing parties to sponsoring teams…you all are so appreciated and will be missed!"

"I’m so sorry you’re leaving but wish you all the best," someone wrote. "All 3 of my daughters worked for Sergio, the most supportive, kind and generous man. Thank-you for all of the wonderful years, and margaritas!"

"This is very sad news," another commented. "My fiancé and I had our first date there. Thank you for being a part of our history."
