'Wiener Takes All': Chicago Steel Hockey Team Hosts 4th Dog Race

Eighteen dogs will compete in the Wiener Dog Race, which will take place during intermission of Saturday's hockey game.

GENEVA, IL — Fans attending Saturday's hockey game where the Chicago Steel will face-off against the Tri-City Storm are in for a treat. Eighteen dachshunds will take to the ice to compete in the first Wiener Dog Race held at the Fox Valley Ice Arena since 2020.

The anticipated upcoming event, taking place at 1996 Kirk Road in Geneva, will mark the fourth time the Steel has hosted the dog race. Monty was the reigning champion in 2018 and 2019 — the event's first two years — before Barry Sanders took home the gold in 2020.

At the first intermission, competing dogs will participate in a preliminary heat, and the top four finishers will move on to the second round, which will happen during the second intermission.

To close out the weekend, the hockey team will celebrate Rusty's — its mascot — birthday with another game against the Tri-City Storm, starting at 3:05 p.m. Mascots from across the Chicago area, including Chicago Wolves mascot Skates and Kane County Cougars mascot Ozzie, will head off in a hockey game of their own during the first intermission.

Tickets to both games, range from $10 to $20, can be purchased on the Steel website, by calling 855-517-8335 or visiting the Steel box office.
