Ice Skating Opens In Glen Ellyn After Frigid Temps

Ice skating opened at select parks in Glen Ellyn following a cold spell in the area.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — After a cold spell that brought subzero temperatures, the ice has become thick enough on some lakes to permit ice skating in Glen Ellyn. As of Jan. 22, skating conditions were favorable at Lake Ellyn, Lake Foxcroft and Newton Park.

According to the Glen Ellyn Park District Rainout Line, the ice was bumpy at Lake Foxcroft and Lake Ellyn. At Newton Park, the east rink had opened for ice skating.

No ice skate rentals are available at Lake Ellyn Park, so visitors must bring their own skates. They can also visit or call Paul’s Shoe Service, 486 N Main St., at 630-790-1030, to inquire about purchasing skates.

Lake Foxcroft Extended cold weather is required for skating to open at Lake Foxcroft. When conditions are right, the lake will welcome ice skating between 6 a.m. and sunset.

Newton Park

The tennis rinks at Newton Park are turned into skating rinks when weather permits (if daytime temperatures stay lower than 22 degrees and ground frost is thick). Open skating is available from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. When open skating is not in effect or skaters are not using the rinks, the rinks can be used for ice hockey.
