LOMBARD, IL — A Lombard man has been charged with a hate crime after police say he pulled a BB gun, shouted racial slurs, yelled "white power" and gave a Nazi Salute in a park Sunday.

Carl Walsh, 35, of the 600 block of Grace Street, was charged with felony hate crime and misdemeanor disorderly conduct in connection with the incident.

Officers were called to the park near Lombard Lagoon on Sept. 1 after Walsh approached a person who was with a group of four people. Police say Walsh "blew a whistle, screamed racial slurs and 'white power' and gave a Nazi salute," according to a news release.

Walsh is accused of lifting his shirt and waving a gun, which was later determined to be a BB gun. Police took Walsh into custody at his home later that day and reported finding a BB gun.

“While DuPage County is a welcoming community, we do not tolerate or welcome the type of behavior alleged against Mr. Walsh,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
