LOMBARD, IL — Three men face multiple felony charges after police say they beat a man, kidnapped him and robbed him Wednesday. Judge Joshua Dieden denied the state's request to hold the men for pre-trial detention, a news release said.

Philip Stamps, Sr., 47, Philip Stamps Jr., 22, both of Chicago, and Joevontae Dixon, 23, of Hillside, were charged with aggravated kidnapping — dangerous weapon, armed robbery and aggravated battery in a public place.

Police were called to the BP at 5 E. North Ave. in Lombard just after 12 p.m. for a report of an altercation. When they got to the scene, officers found that the men who had been in the fight were not present. An Infinity Q45 was left at the scene, police say.

According to police, the man came to the gas station under the impression he was selling his Infinity Q45 to possibly sell it to Stamps Jr., who took it for a "test drive." During the drive, Stamps Sr. and Dixon trailed the Infinity in a Chrysler minivan, police say.

Prosecutors say Stamps Jr. pulled into the BP lot under the guise that he would inspect the car. He is accused of stealing the man's computer and phone, along with a briefcase that held 40 car titles, and putting them in the minivan.

Stamps Jr. is accused of punching the man in the head when he got into the minivan to try to get his belongings back. Stamps Sr. is accused of driving away from the gas station with the man inside the car.

The trio is accused of heading down I-290 in the minivan and threatening to kill the man, a news release said. Police say the men "hit and kicked the victim and beat him with a red steering wheel anti-theft club."

According to police, the men forced the car owner to have his family send him money via Zelle. Stamps Jr. and Dixon are accused of biting and beating the man on two occasions when he tried to get free.

Police pulled over the car just before 3:15 p.m. near Van Buren and California in Chicago and took Stamps Sr., Stamps Jr. and Dixon into custody. The man was taken to a nearby hospital with "bite marks on his arms and stomach and numerous swelled contusions to his head and body," the news release said.

As of Thursday, the man was still hospitalized, per prosecutors.

“The type of violent behavior alleged against these three defendants is extremely alarming and will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

Berlin added, “The victim allegedly endured a severe physical beating, kidnapping and three hours of terror inflicted upon him by these three defendants. I thank the Lombard Police Department for their outstanding work in identifying the individuals allegedly responsible for kidnapping, beating and robbing an innocent man."

The men are set to appear in court Dec. 2. If convicted, they face up to 30 years in prison.
