The Chevrolet crossed over into the southbound lanes of traffic for unknown reasons and struck the Nissan head-on, Smith said.

Smith said all victims are expected to survive. The driver of the Chevrolet and one of the children have since been released from the hospital.

A family member of the driver of the Nissan said her nephew suffered five breaks in his femur that required surgery.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Smith said, adding that Route 59 was closed for several hours Friday as police conducted an investigation at the crash scene.
