Authorities launched an investigation into the fatal shooting at about 8:20 p.m. on Oct. 4, 2023, when they received a 911 call and began searching for the cell phone that placed the call. They came upon a vehicle at a gas station in the area of Cedar Lake Road and Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach that appeared to be damaged by gunfire, according to a news release.

As they investigated the shooting, they found the Fox Lake boy with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was pronounced dead.

Police learned the boy was a passenger in a vehicle that sustained gunshot damage, and they determined the shooting occurred in the area of Midland Drive and Sycamore Drive in Round Lake, police said.

A preliminary investigation shows the driver of the vehicle, Greenewald and another passenger stopped in this area to meet someone, and they were approached by at least one person on foot. The shooting took place a short time later.

After the shooting, the person who approached on foot fled from the scene, as did the driver. The
driver drove to the gas station, where officers located the vehicle and victim, police said.

Police conducted numerous interviews and collected forensic evidence, which led them to identify the Gilbert brothers as suspects in the shooting. They remain in custody at the Lake County Jail as they await an initial court appearance.
