Authorities say a person fired the gun outside a home in the 1500 block of Cherokee Drive in Round Lake Beach at about 9:10 p.m. Wednesday. The bullet went into the nearby home and hit Rodriguez, according to a news release from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, which is heading the investigation.
Police are not disclosing how many rounds were fired in the shooting, Christopher Covelli, spokesman for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, told Patch Thursday.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Rodriguez with a gunshot wound. She was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
It does not appear Rodriguez was the target in the shooting, according to authorities.
"It is unknown if the shooter knew the girl, but as she was inside her home when shot, and the bullet appears to be a stray round, she is not believed to be the intended target," Covelli told Patch.
"Nobody is in custody, but the investigation is continuing."
