Coroner IDs Grayslake Man, 40, Fatally Hit By Metra Train

The man fatally struck by a Metra train on the Union Pacific North line Thursday has been identified as Matthew Ahern of Grayslake.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A 40-year-old man killed after being hit by a Metra train on the Union Pacific North line last week has been identified.

The man has identified the man as Matthew Ahern of Grayslake, Stephen Newton, deputy coroner for the Lake County Coroner's Office, told Patch on Tuesday. Newton said preliminary autopsy results show Ahern died from blunt force injuries.

Ahern was fatally struck by the train at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday at milepost 34.75, which is between the Waukegan and North Chicago Metra stations and near Oakwood Cemetery, Meg Thomas-Reile, a spokeswoman for Metra, told Patch last week.

Inbound and outbound train traffic was halted in the area following the collision. Train traffic was back up and moving within three hours, Thomas-Reile said.
