Grayslake Man Faces Hate Crime Charge After Bar Altercation: Police
Police said Joseph Young directed a barrage of racial slurs at a Waukegan woman while another woman insulted her during the argument.

GRAYSLAKE, IL — Two Grayslake residents face criminal charges following an altercation with a woman at a bar in unincorporated Grayslake over the weekend during which one of the people directed racial slurs toward the woman, police said.
Joseph R. Young, 40, has been charged with a hate crime, battery and disorderly conduct in connection with the incident, which took place at at a bar in the 34000 block of North Route 45, police said.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the bar for a report of a battery and found a 52-year-old Waukegan woman battered, police said. Sheriff’s deputies determined the woman was at the bar with a group of friends. She was approached Young, who police said began yelling racial slurs at her.

Young was with Ashley N. Anderson, 36, who police said began insulting the woman as well. The woman moved outside to the front of the bar, in an effort to get away from Young and Anderson, but was followed by the two people.

Police said that Young continued with a "barrage"of racial slurs, directed at the victim, and when the woman tried to walk away again, police said that Young attacked her, striking her on her body. Police said that Anderson also continued to yell at the woman prior to the physical attack.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics and released.
Young was charged with a felony hate crime, battery and disorderly conduct. He remains held in the Lake County Jail on $150,000 bail and is due in court on November 8. Anderson was charged with disorderly conduct. She posted a $1,500.00 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 16.
