Ice Storm Could Bring Hazardous Travel Conditions Wednesday

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Lake County Wednesday.

CHICAGO AREA, IL — A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 6 a.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday for most of the Chicago area as an ice storm could cause hazardous travel conditions and power outages.

The winter weather advisory will take effect at 6 a.m. Wednesday for Kane, Lake and Cook counties, with the northern portion of Illinois expected to see the greatest ice accumulation. Freezing rain is expected and wind gusts as high as 35 mph are also in the forecast.

According to the National Weather Service, hazardous travel conditions are possible during today's ice storm. An ice storm warning has been issued for McHenry County, where ice accumulation could reach up to a half-inch and travel is being discouraged Wednesday.

In Lake County, two school districts have cancelled in-person classes as of 5:30 a.m. Wednesday: Antioch District 34 and Zion District 6. To check for updated closings, visit the emergencyclosingcenter.com.
