Impairment Likely Caused Fatal Lake County Head-On Crash: Police

A 72-year-old Ingleside man died after the car that he was driving was hit head-on by another vehicle that police said had been swerving.

GRAYSLAKE, IL – A 73-year-old Ingleside man was killed on Friday night after the vehicle he was driving was hit head-on by another vehicle that had been swerving and crossed the center line and hit the vehicle, police said.

The crash took place at 9:50 p.m. on Friday on Route 59 just south of Route 132, police said. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that an investigation shows that the 74-year-old man from unincorporated Lake Villa was driving a GMC Arcadia and for an unknown reason, veered into the southbound lane and struck a Kia Sorrento driven by the other man, police said.

Both drivers were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries. The driver of the Kia was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The driver of the GMC remains at the hospital in critical condition, police said.

Impairment appears to be a factor in the fatal crash, police said and witnesses told police that the GMC Arcadia had been swerving before it veered into the path of the oncoming car, police said.

The crash remains under investigation and an autopsy is scheduled for the victim who died in the crash.
