Police Arrest Chicago Man Wanted In Gurnee Jewelry Store Theft

The Gurnee Police Department and Lake County authorities identified and arrested a suspect wanted in a Dec. 30 Gurnee jewelry store theft.

GURNEE, IL — The Gurnee Police Department identified a suspect wanted in a Dec. 30 theft at a Gurnee jewelry store. According to the police department, Gurnee detectives worked with the Lake County State's Attorney's office to identify and get an arrest warrant for 43-year-old Demond Reid, from Chicago, who's accused of stealing $50,000 worth of diamonds from the store in the 6500 block of Grand Avenue. Following what police said as a thorough investigation, detectives worked with several law enforcement agencies in Chicago to locate Reid, who was arrested by the Cook County Sheriff's office Thursday, and was taken to the Gurnee Police Department, according to police.

“This case is a great example of how our officers and community members can create great partnerships to solve crime,” Gurnee Police Chief Brian Smith said, according to a release from the department. “The connections and interactions we made with citizens through social media have allowed us to utilize this resource and promote the safety of the entire community. We encourage citizens to participate in the process by calling the police at the onset of suspicious activity and taking responsibility for reporting information that may lead to an arrest.”

Gurnee Police responded to the local jewelry store on Dec. 30 for a report about a man stealing diamonds from the business. Police said officers weren't able to find the suspect that day, but were able to identify him based on surveillance video images, and by using social media and help from the community.

Reid was booked at the Lake County Jail Friday, and faces a felony charge of theft over $10,000, authorities reported. His bail was set at $75,000, and his court date is set for Jan. 30.
