Student Stabbed During Fight At Waukegan High School: Report

According to school officials, the school was placed on soft lockdown after the Thursday incident.

WAUKEGAN, IL — The Waukegan Police Department is investigating after a fight between two students broke out around noon Thursday in a bathroom at Waukegan High School's Washington Campus, during which one student reportedly stabbed the other, according to a statement sent to families from Waukegan High School Principal Timothy Bryner. According to Bryner, the campus was placed on soft lockdown immediately after the fight, and the school day continued "without further incident."

School officials don't believe the incident is connected to a threatening message found earlier this week in a campus restroom, according to the principal.

In the statement, Bryner noted that the school utilizes several "enhanced safety measures beyond what is considered standard school security, including metal detectors and x-ray machines, which students and their belongings pass through prior to entering the building."

However, Bryner added that they are constantly constantly reevaluating and refining procedures to ensure the safest school environment, and that the safety of students and staff is always a top priority.

School and district officials are also investigating the fight, and according to Bryner, they can't provide further details regarding those involved or the ongoing investigation.

"As this week continues, and into next week, you will notice some enhanced safety measures at our campus," Bryner said. "These procedures will be in place to ensure the safety of all students and staff, while limiting distractions to the school environment.

Mental health professionals are also available for students to meet with, according to Bryner.

"We want to thank parents for their patience and understanding, and wish to thank students for their cooperation and maturity during that we know was a stressful situation," the principal stated.
