What's the Most Popular Genre at 'This Old Book'?

With so many books to choose from at This Old Book, from military history to classic fiction, the most popular genre may come as a surprise.

"Train books," said Grayslake resident Lorraine Green, who has worked at the shop for 10 years.

The shop got about 500 train-related books from an estate sale "and we sold every single book," she said. The shop, which opened in May 2003, is planning to have a train-themed window display soon.

All of the books at This Old Book are used, collected from estate sales or donated by customers. The shop also offers a store credit program, where customers can bring in books they don't want anymore (particularly hardcover books with dust jackets), and they can receive a credit for other books in the shop.

Do people even buy books anymore, with the popularity of e-readers?

"I think it's going to come back," said Green. "When you sit at a computer all day long, the last thing you want to do is go home and read on your computer."
