These Highland Park and Highwood nonprofits are working to strengthen families, support seniors and bring art and services to the community.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — If you’re like many of your Highland Park and Highwood neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Highland Park area.

Here are 5 local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday, listed in alphabetical order:

  1. Highland Park Community Foundation: Addresses unmet needs in the community by giving grants to local organizations focused on education, human services, arts and community development.
  2. Southeast Lake County Faith in Action Volunteers: Provides free transportation and companionship to seniors and disabled adults, helping them maintain independence through a network of trained volunteers.
  3. The Art Center Highland Park: Enriches the community through comprehensive visual arts education, rotating gallery exhibitions and outreach programs making art more accessible to diverse populations.
  4. Tri-Con Child Care Center: Provides affordable, high-quality early childhood education and care to families in the community.
