2nd Annual Dia De Los Muertos Week In Highland Park Honors Ancient Celebration

The week-long festivities honor the Mexican holiday that celebrates the lives of departed loved ones.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Highland Park's second annual Día de los Muertos week will transform the Downtown area into a vibrant corridor of themed experiences from Oct. 25 to Nov. 2.

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the lives of departed loved ones that takes place on Nov.1-2. The week of festivities in Highland Park will kick off with a free community celebration from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Memorial Park Gazebo at 405 Prospect Ave.

There, a large scale Ofrenda, designed by local designer Jessica Rivero, will serve as the anchor of the festivities.

Throughout the week, visitors will be able to join in on cultural experiences, ranging from food and drink tastings to craft workshops and performances.

Participating community partners and businesses include The Art Center, The Highwood Library, The Park District of Highland Park, Baird & Warner, Diana Gran Portraits, Freestyle Ceramics & Tufting, Indus Progressive Indian, La Taquiza, Nicolaz and Son Landscape, Pixca, Soulshine Boutique & Healing Sanctuary, Tamales Restaurant, Wayfarer Theaters, Yoga6, Secret World Books, and many
others soon to be announced.

“I’m thrilled to bring Hispanic culture, tradition, and community spirit to life in Downtown Highland
Park once again this year,” says Diana Gran, owner of Diana Gran Portraits. “Día de los Muertos is a
celebration for all to experience, and it’s wonderful for our businesses and community members to
come together to honor this tradition and pay tribute to those who have passed before us."

A limited number of DDM Experience Passes are available for $35 in advance at $45 at the kickoff event. The passes offer access to wine and tequila tastings, pan de muerto baking, sugar skull decorating and more.

Pass holders will also get VIP admission to the Catrina Fashion Show and Contest taking place on Sunday, where community members will share their personal interpretations of "La Catrina."
