HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

ART HEIST
Someone stole 12 pieces of art worth about $70,000 combined from a home in the 1200 block of Park Avenue West at some point between late February and April 20.

STOLEN COMPUTER
Someone stole an Apple MacBook from the administration building at True North School District, 760 Red Oak Lane, between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on April 20. Police said the laptop was later found.

CASH THEFT
Staff at the Sunset Valley Golf Course, 1390 Sunset Road, reported on the morning of April 23 that about $300 had gone missing from the safe bank bags.

STOLEN BIKE
Someone stole a black Trek bike and orange helmet after it was left unlocked in the 1700 block of First Street between 3:30 and 7:50 p.m. on April 26. The helmet was later recovered.

HOME BURGLARY
Some time late during the night of April 30, multiple burglars broke into an occupied home in the 1700 block of Dale Avenue while the residents were at home and asleep. The burglar alarm went off and the burglars fled without having any interactions with the residents. Unspecified property was reported stolen from various rooms in the house and police did not release any information about suspects.

STOLEN CARS

  • Someone stole a possibly unlocked Ford SUV from a driveway in the 1100 block of Sherwood Road during the night of April 22 or early morning hours of April 23.
  • Two unidentified thieves stole a car around 7 p.m. on April 25 after its owner left it unlocked with the keys inside while picking up an order at the McDonald's, 1988 First Street.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone burglarized an unlocked Hyundai in the 900 block of Princeton Avenue, stealing a pair of RayBan sunglasses valued at about $200 during the night of April 22 or early morning hours of April 23.
  • An unlocked Ford and an unlocked Subaru were burglarized during the night of April 22 or early morning hours of April 23, nothing was stolen from inside.
  • Two unidentified people got into a possibly unlocked car in the 1500 block of Forest Avenue around 2 a.m. on April 23, but nothing was reported stolen from inside.
  • An Apple iPad and laptop were stolen form an unlocked Volkswagen while it was parked in the 500 block of Hill Street between 3 and 7:40 a.m. on April 24.
  • Someone stole a wallet from inside an unlocked Jeep parked in the 200 block of Bloom Street between 5 and 11:30 a.m. on April 23. One of the credit cards inside was used for a fraudulent purchase and the wallet was recovered for a loss of about $17.
  • Around 1:45 a.m. on April 25, someone burglarized an unlocked Jeep in the 2100 block of Linden Avenue, but nothing was reported stolen from within.
  • An unlocked Cadillac and other cars parked in the 1600 block of McGovern Street were burglarized between 10 p.m. on April 27 and 10:40 a.m. on April 28, although nothing was reported stolen.

PACKAGE THEFTS

  • Someone stole an Amazon package worth about $20 after it had been delivered to the front porch of a home in the 2900 block of Idlewood Lane at some point on April 17.
  • On April 26, police were told that someone had stolen a package with a computer inside from a UPS location about a month earlier for a loss of approximately $2,900.

SHOPLIFTING

  • Someone stole about $1,700 worth of cosmetic items from the CVS Pharmacy, 1539 Clavey Road, between 5:10 and 5:20 p.m. on April 18. Police were told the following day and no description was provided.
  • Around 5 p.m. on April 2, someone stole about $300 worth of alcohol from the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, police were told on the afternoon of April 19.
  • Someone stole about $1,000 worth of fragrances from the Ulta Beauty, 135 Skokie Valley Road, around 3 p.m. on April 25.
  • On April 14, someone stole about $3,000 worth of items from the CVS Pharmacy, 2000 Skokie Valley Road, police were on April 27.
  • Someone walked behind the counter at Walgreens, 355 Elm Place, and stole a pack of cigarettes at some point on April 30.

OTHER THEFTS

  • Someone stole a pair of Apple headphones that were left on a table at Lefty's Pizza Kitchen, 600 Central Ave., at some point after 12:20 p.m. on April 20.
  • A Motorola cell phone was stolen from a purse in the 3100 block of Cottonwood Court sometime after 2 p.m. on April 24 and before 10 a.m. on April 25.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Someone caused about $12,500 worth of damage to a wooden retaining wall in the 1800 block of Crescent Court at some point during the first few weeks of April. It appeared the wall was charred from a fire.
  • A home in the 3000 block of Parkside Drive was egged again prior to 9:30 p.m. on April 24. The estimated cost of the damage was not known at the time of the report.
  • A rental car appeared to have been dented and keyed while parked at a coffee shop in the 1700 block of Second Street between about noon and 2 p.m. on April 28.
  • Someone damaged the front door of a home in the 1200 block of Lynn Terrace at some point prior to 4:15 p.m. on April 28. The door appeared to have been damaged at the bottom in a way that would not allow it to be locked.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Juan Jose Ramon Lopez-Medellin, 43, of the 2800 block of 31st Street, Zion, was arrested around 5 p.m. on April 20 after police were called to the intersection of Park Avenue West and Skokie Valley Road for a check of wellbeing. They found Lopez-Medellin was too drunk to drive and placed him under arrest on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and driving without a license. Officers also issued him citations for having expired plates and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol.

Edgar Carson, 49, of the 9500 block of South Yale Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 4 a.m. on April 23 after officers stopped to assist a motorist in the 2000 block of Skokie Valley Road and found Carson was driving drunk with a gun.. He was charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon — one for not having a concealed carry permit and another for having an uncased, loaded and immediately accessible gun — one count of driving under the influence of alcohol, and citations for improper stopping, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.

Andrew L. Madenberg, 62, of the 500 block of North Logan Street in Denver, Colorado, was arrested around 12:30 a.m. on April 29 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after police were called to assist another agency with an intoxicated person in the first block of Sheridan Road.

Jose Angel Cruz-Santiago, 24, of the 200 block of Highwood Avenue, Highwood, was arrested around 1:45 a.m. on April 29 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and driving with a suspended or revoked license following a traffic stop at the intersection of Green Bay Road and Roger Williams Avenue for a vehicle swerving across lanes. He was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and illegal stopping or standing.
