Fake Bomb Found in Highland Park

Suspicious object called in on 9/11.

The Highland Park Police and Waukegan Fire Department Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious object they thought might be a bomb found on a Highland Park beach on .

The object, a cylindrical copper tube, approximately 1.5 inches in diameter and 12 inches in length, appeared to have nails glued in on one end when it was discovered at 6 p.m. on Sunday at the beach 100 yards north of the Highwood Water Plant.

Though it didn't have any wires, fuse or other triggering mechanisms attached, police treated the tube as though it were a bomb by countercharging it. They determined the tube was "not explosive in nature," according to a report issued by the Highland Park Police Department.
