Highland Park, Highwood Runners Compete In Chicago Marathon

In all, 46 local runners finished Sunday's 26.2-mile race.

CHICAGO — It may have been a long wait, but for the participants in the 43rd edition of the Chicago Marathon, it was worth it. Taking place for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sunday's race was filled with local participants.

There were 44 runners from Highland Park and 2 from Highwood out of the approximately 26,000 that finished the marathon, according to unofficial results.

Seifu Tura, of Ethiopia, won the men's race with a time of 2:06:12 seconds, while and Ruth Chepngetich, of Kenya, took the women's crown after finishing in 2:22:31.

The wheelchair race was won by Daniel Romanchuk and Tatyana McFadden, both of the United States, in 1:29:07 and 1:48:57.

Among the fastest local runners, the highest finish within an age and gender group was Highland Park resident George Mocogni, who finished 43rd among men aged 60 to 64 with a time of 3:53:20.

The top 10 Highland Park runners, in order of their finishing position within their gender, were the following:

  • Melissa Frankford, 3:34:41, 174th in the 30-34 age group, 698th among women, 3,270th overall
  • Paige Zelinsky, 3:44:47, 248th in the 30-34 age group, 1,083 among women, 4,400 overall
  • Jonathan Watts, 3:22:51, 302nd in the 40-44 age group, 1,729 among men, 2,092 overall
  • Edith O'Brien, 3:57:34, 22nd in the 55-59 age group, 1,790 among women, 6,345 overall
  • Alexandra "Sasha" Giedd, 4:15:27, 729th in the 25-29 age group, 2,923 among women, 9,136 overall
  • Brian Landau, 3:40:55, 287th in the 45-49 age group, 3,015th among men, 3,940 overall
  • Kristin Hintermeister, 4:18:10, 563rd in the 35-39 age group, 3,128th among women, 9,589 overall
  • Jeremy Bloom, 3:45:28, 584th in the 25-29 age group, 3,376 among men, 4,490 overall
  • Renee Dominguez, 4:22:42, 288th in the 45-49 age group, 3,412nd among women, 10,304 overall
  • Kristie McCarthy, 4:31:08, 648th in the 40-44 age group, 4,073 among women, 11,762 overall

The two Highwood finishers were:

  • Paul Wehner, 3:58:52, 148th in the 55-59 age group, 4,690th among men, 6,570th overall
  • Brian Pastroff, 4:12:02, 454nd in the 50-54 age group, 5,905th among men, 8,568th overall
