Highwood Man Dies In Head-On Crash While Driving Wrong Way On Route 41 In North Chicago

Two people in the other car were taken to an area hospital for treatment for their injuries, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office.

WAUKEGAN, IL — A wrong-way driver died in a head-on crash early Sunday on Route 41, authorities said.

George Santi, 67, of Highwood, was driving a Honda SUV south in the northbound lanes of traffic when he crashed into another car shortly before 2:15 a.m. south of the intersection of Brompton Avenue in North Chicago, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office.

Santi was pronounced dead at the scene. North Chicago fire crews rushed the two occupants of the Honda sedan he crashed into to an area hospital, according to the coroner's office.

Testing for drugs and alcohol has not been completed, according to the coroner's office, but autopsy results indicate that Santi died from blunt force injuries suffered from the crash.

The North Chicago Police Department and Lake County's Major Crash Assistance Team, which determined that Santi was driving in the wrong lanes, are continuing to investigate the crash.
