HPHS Construction Gets Council Go-Ahead, Parking Lot on Hold

Highland Park High School can begin its expansion and renovation plans when school lets out next month, having won approval this week from the Highland Park City Council, according to an article in the Highland Park News. However, a parking lot expansion is on hold because of neighbors’ concerns over traffic problems in the area.

Construction will start with the 78,500-square-foot fitness addition, the article says. That structure will eat into the existing parking lot, so the district wants to expand a small parking lot, making it roughly five times bigger, at the corner of Vine and St. Johns avenues. But neighbors have long complained about traffic backup during drop-off and pick-up, so the city said it will study the issue more before granting approval for the larger lot.
