Dr. Faiq Jaber Albazzaz passed away on December 17, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Faiq was the husband of Thuraia; devoted father of Alexandra, Michael, Brian, and Samara; grandfather to Christopher, Eva, and Bella; and a kind uncle to many.

Faiq was born in Baghdad, Iraq and attended the University of Baghdad College of Medicine. He immigrated to the United States in 1966 to pursue his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Mississippi. He completed his fellowship in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine at Harvard in 1971. Faiq spent the majority of his illustrious career as a Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine and held the esteemed position of Chief of Pulmonary Medicine for over three decades at the Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center. His true passion was research and discovery, as exemplified through his numerous scientific publications in the field of pulmonary physiology. Even after retiring as a Professor Emeritus in 2005, Faiq’s devotion to medicine persisted. He continued his work as a pulmonologist well after his retirement from academic medicine and spent one month providing medical care to tuberculosis patients in Kampala, Uganda.

Though he came to the United States as a young adult, Faiq never lost his attachment to and love for Iraq. He was heavily involved in the Chicagoland Iraqi community, organizing an association to foster connections and continue cultural traditions among Iraqi-Americans. He aided countless new immigrants gain their footing when first arriving to the U.S. and was seen as a mentor in the community.

Faiq was an avid reader with a sharp, inquisitive mind and a deep understanding of history and politics. He was endlessly curious about the world and never lost his wonder at nature, physics, and science. Faiq loved exploration and travel, taking yearly trips to a multitude of countries across the globe.

Above all Faiq was gentle, humble, kind, funny, and strong. He made an impact on many through his compassion and wit. He will be dearly missed.
