Featured Obituary:
Spak, Audrey Jean (nee Greenman) 93, born and raised in Champaign, Illinois, and later a resident of Wilmette, Glencoe, and Longboat Key, Florida. Beloved wife of the late Barry; loving mother of Sue Galler (Jim Jorgensen), Dr. Bradley (Deborah) Spak and Craig (Hildy) Spak; adored grandmother of Margo (Pierre) Pactanac, Meredith (Prashant) Srivastava, David (Ana) Cohn, Alexander Spak, Lu Banyan, Kaela Graham, the late Hannan Spak, and Veronica (Nicolas) de Bontin; GG to Emma, Mila, Luz, Graham, Penny, Ash, Kiran, Eden, Mateo, and Owen; cherished daughter of the late Mae and Hyman Greenman; dear sister of the late Shirley (Nathan) Sostrin, the late Dr. Marshall (Lois) Greenman and Toby (Joe) Aronstam and dear sister-in-law of the late Donald Spak, Jay (Nora) Spak, and Lorin (Susan) Spak. A loving cousin, aunt, and a respected teacher to many on the North Shore, and in Sarasota.
Audrey lived a full, active life, and was happiest when surrounded by her family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Married for almost 55 years, Audrey and Barry spent countless hours at the golf course together and with their best friends, traveled to play courses in the Caribbean, and taught others their love of the game.
Audrey loved traveling with her family, walking endless miles on the beach and wading in the warm gulf shore waters of Florida, and playing bridge with her friends. Wherever you would find Audrey, her younger sister Toby would not be far behind. Audrey found purpose in teaching elementary and middle school in Glencoe, and she had an affinity for teaching students with special needs later at New Trier High School and Sarasota High School. No matter the school or the year, everyone knew Mrs. Spak.
Audrey was an avid reader always with a book or her Kindle close by, and never missed the chance to watch a Cubs game. Audrey kept up with friends who were half her age, jet skied with her grandchildren in her 80s and walked 5 miles daily into her 90s, loving every minute of it. Her favorite phrase was: “You don’t use it, you lose it!” Life will never be the same without her.Read more via Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home »
